Our commitment

Diversity, equity, and inclusion

Inclusion is essential

To build digital services that are simple, effective, and accessible to all, our teams must reflect the diverse communities we serve across the US.

Improving access to government services is essential to rebuilding trust in institutions, strengthening our democracy, and creating a more just society—especially for vulnerable populations.

Our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion not only reflects our values as a public benefit corporation but also enriches our ability to do this work. By striving to represent all of the people in the U.S., we’re better equipped to meet our social responsibility to all of the people we serve. We published our first diversity, equity, and inclusion report in 2021 to publicly share our progress toward building a diverse workforce.

We've grown by nearly 100 employees since conducting our last survey and continue to advance toward our DE&I goals. We're proud to have been able to increase representation on Nava's executive team and maintain the overall diversity ratio among all staff. However, we still have work to do.

Majority BIPOC by 2025

By 2025, we hope Nava better matches the representation of race and ethnicity in the US by comprising majority Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. This year’s survey results represent a snapshot of our company as we continue to work toward our DE&I goals. It’s not a complete picture—our survey is voluntary, with around 88 percent of the company responding this year.

How we’re doing in 2023 compared to 2022 and 2021.

Numbers help us track progress but they don’t tell a complete story about the experiences, perspectives, and intersectional identities represented at Nava. To give a sense of how Nava grows and changes, we collect data annually. The way we collect and use data is anonymous, transparent, and consensual. Read more in our methodology post.

The data below was collected in December, 2023 and 88 percent of the team responded.

To try and provide a more accurate representation of race, ethnicity, and gender, the survey allowed people to describe themselves in their own terms, choose more than one option, and/or decline to answer.

Race & ethnicity

Because some people selected multiple options to describe their race and ethnicity,* the numbers below add up to more than 100 percent.**

When I first joined Nava, someone immediately added me to the earthtones group. Due to that and the inclusiveness I encountered in the group meetings, I felt an immediate sense of belonging at the company. Very unexpected given the short length of time I had been employed.

Nava Employee

Support & community

To help create a welcoming environment where people feel respected and valued, Nava supports several Employee Resource Groups (ERG) and affinity groups.

Each ERG is created by employees to provide community, mentorship, and support. ERGs have annual budgets, organize internal and external activities, and ERG Leads receive stipends and meet with the Executive team to track initiatives and discuss feedback. ERGs contribute to critical conversations about how we can grow as a public benefit corporation and a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace.

In addition to ERGs, Nava employees have formed affinity groups around different identities to create support, community, and conversation in a more informal capacity. Nava affinity groups include spaces for employees who identify as Jewish, employees who identify as Muslim, and employees who identify as disabled or neurodivergent, or care for someone with a disability or neurodivergence.

earthtones

The earthtones ERG aims to actively foster a culture which values the contributions of Nava’s Black employees in tangible ways, and celebrates the diverse perspectives and backgrounds they represent. The mission of the earthtones ERG is to focus on organizational issues impacting Black employees, to promote the recruitment, retention, and career mobility of Blacks working in tech at Nava, and beyond, and to use our influence to positively impact the greater Black community.

Gender equity

Gender Equity is Nava’s ERG open to all women, genderqueer, agender, and non-binary employees at Nava. They strive to create spaces at Nava where members are empowered to build community, foster discussion, and promote inclusivity on all levels.

Juntos

Juntos is committed to fostering a supportive and uplifting environment that promotes networking opportunities, professional development, and discussions on topics impacting the Hispanic, Latinx/Latine, and Luso community. We actively facilitate talent recruitment and retention while celebrating our culture. Through collaboration and unity, we empower individuals to grow into leadership roles. We do this together, Juntos.

Kaleidoscope

Kaleidoscope celebrates, safeguards, and holds space for LGBTQIA+ people at Nava. Kaleidoscope members have created a safe place to form relationships with coworkers that are focused on community rather than exchange or development of economic value. Our awesome members include folks who identify as queer, gay, trans, non-binary, dyke, asexual, lesbian, femme, agender, genderqueer, pansexual, gray-asexual, and bi.
