Eligibility and enrollment can be faster, easier, and less expensive.

Our social safety net is made up of a constellation of services and programs, but it’s not much of a net at all—it’s an obstacle course where often the more help you need, the harder it gets. And recent efforts to make it harder for struggling workers to get healthcare, food, and housing could have harmful effects on families.

Now more than ever, it’s critical that we build an equitable, human-centered safety net fit for the digital age. We’ve partnered with the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Service, and Code for America, to bring best-in-class design, technical, product, and policy expertise together in the ongoing fight against entrenched poverty in the US.

What we're up to

We're working with several states to build faster, easier, and less expensive ways for people to access critical government services. In Michigan, for example, the Integrated Benefits Initiative worked with Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and Civilla to build and implement a streamlined application that helps Michiganders enroll in SNAP and Medicaid. Alongside Michigan, the Initiative is also working with other states, including Colorado and Alaska, on their modernization efforts to streamline eligibility and enrollment.
