In partnership with the State of Maryland, Nava Labs is piloting an AI-powered service, DocumentAI, to modernize and automate critical aspects of work requirement verification to help states comply with last year’s federal H.R. 1 legislation.
Maryland residents will benefit from automated document verification that catches upload errors earlier, provides immediate feedback, and can speed up Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefit determinations. It can also reduce manual document review and corrections for caseworkers, lowering administrative burden and costs while improving data accuracy.
DocumentAI is a reusable, configuration solution designed to support faster adoption and expansion over time.
We just started piloting DocumentAI with 10% of Maryland’s OneApp users. We’ll leverage pilot insights to refine the service, targeting a statewide rollout by December 2026. Nava Labs is also partnering with the Annie E. Casey Foundation to conduct user research, ensuring DocumentAI is accessible and beneficial for young adults.
