We’re excited to announce Nava Labs, Nava’s philanthropically funded division, is joining a project that received the Public Benefit Innovation Fund grant from Center for Civic Futures. With this $1.2 million grant, the American Public Human Services Association (APHSA) will partner with Nava and the State of Maryland to pilot artificial intelligence-powered tools that modernize and automate work requirement verification for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid. Our work will help agencies comply with H.R. 1, recent federal legislation that mandates work requirements for state-administered benefit programs such as SNAP.
Nava is a public benefit corporation on a mission to make government services simple and effective. For the past several years, we’ve honed our capabilities in leveraging generative AI to improve public services. We’ll help Maryland, and other states, leverage AI-powered tools to prevent erroneous benefit terminations, reduce manual workload and administrative burden for beneficiaries and caseworkers, and drastically improve data accuracy.
“We’re thrilled to begin this strategic partnership with the American Public Human Services Association to ensure states are prepared to handle H.R. 1 work requirements,” said Genevieve Gaudet, Director of Nava Labs. “We’ll start the pilot in Maryland with the goal of expanding to other states, equipping them with open source code, structured technical documentation, and implementation guidance to deploy solutions that address H.R. 1 requirements.”
Nava is a leader in researching and implementing AI-powered solutions that actuate positive outcomes for the public. We recently won a contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Artificial Intelligence Institute (NAII) to support AI-powered solutions that enhance the Veteran health care system. Meanwhile, Nava Labs is researching and piloting AI-powered tools with caseworkers who help families find and apply for benefits in California, Texas, and Pennsylvania.
